Tips for refitting your store

One of my most important failures was when I ran my own little scrapbook store. There was a ton of things I didn’t have control of, including inventory and costing. So I learned by getting burned. There are a lot of decisions I would never make again, and a few lessons I took away regarding retail. 🙂

I'd really much go into the hospitality and food biz. :(

Many business owners want their shop to appear new, bright, and similar to the visual layout of chain stores. Customers like this too, because they are accustomed to a clean environment that seems new and fresh rather than outdated. Everything from large signs to bright tiled floors are essential to create a familiar environment that makes customers want to enter and induces them to make purchases. After you’ve shopped around for shopfitters can begin to discuss the following with them.

Weighing Need and Budget

Many shops require all sorts of improvements, but it is better to focus on the facade and worry about the guts of the shop later. By this it is meant that most customers come in to buy and few visit the restroom. The outside of the store is the most critical asset, because it is a like a billboard. It states the presence of a shop and ideally arouses interest.

Beyond the store front, the shop itself should be neat and well presented. This is relatively inexpensive to care for, because wallpapering will create sparkle everywhere and rugs can be cleaned. Installing new rugs and tiles can be expensive, but it is secondary to what people see at head height. Some colorful posters and banners can offset a dull floor.

Your shop facade should make people curious. Or excited. If you passed by Pinkie Pie's Cupcake Corner, wouldn't you be irresistibly drawn in?

The bathroom or storage area need little improvement right away. If a bathroom is so bad it is undesirable for visitors to see, then it can merely be marked as off limits and only be used by employees. A small shop in particular does not see many bathroom requests, while large stores render a public bathroom a necessity.

Considering Loans or Spending Earnings

A business loan is awarded by a bank or creditor that is convinced a business will succeed long enough to repay both the principle and interest. It can be difficult for a startup to obtain a loan, and new business owners receive small loans at best. Private investors will offer money in exchange for a share of the profits. It can be difficult for a small shop owner to find interested investors.

It is possible to spend personal savings, and this is the most probable option for entirely new business owners. Small shops are not horribly expensive to outfit, and it is a highly personal venture in any case. The crucial point is not to spend so much money that the owner cannot afford to keep the doors open for more than a few months.

One of the most awesome scrapshops I know, Lasting Impression... which I really should write about sometime. They have the best-stocked store. Every single nook and cranny is filled with amazing surprises!

Accessories for Stowing Products

Seemingly tiny shops can be crammed full of merchandise. It is possible thanks to a clever use of racks and wall mounts. Every wall except behind the cash register should be inviting to handle, and any space behind the register might contain special items that are restricted from minors or delicate to hold. Any wall racks should begin at waist height and continue upwards until it is too high for an average adult to reach.

Away from the walls are movable racks, and they come in many standards and fashions. The simplest could be two-by-fours supporting cut garden fence as a surface to complicated steel frames that are sturdy enough to support heavy products. Large chain stores use gondola shelving, which have a fixed surface at the base and many holes for inserting hangers or shelves at any height. Shelves should be spaced open enough that customers can navigate and damage to merchandise is unlikely.
