Philippine National Artist, Benedicto Reyes Cabrera, has been widely recognized as a master of contemporary art. More popularly known as Bencab, Cabrera is now commemorating his 50th year of creating art and providing inspiration for generations of Filipinos. Most fittingly, one of the highlights of this milestone year will be the fact that his exhibit, Frames of Reference, will serve as the curtain call for the Lopez Museum.

The artist’s self portrait.

That’s right, the Lopez Museum will be closing down this year, as it will be saying goodbye to its old site and moving to a new, temporary site before settling in its new home in 2017. In the meantime, nothing can be more nostalgically fitting than Frames of Reference, an exhibit that offers a glimpse into BenCab’s life and art practice during the late 1960s and onwards. More than his simply collected work on display, the exhibition is an intimate portrait of BenCab as a person and his many personas – the artist, the lover, the family man, the bibliophile and the collector.

Roughly 15 never before seen art-books will be made available to the public. These small scrapbook-like compilations of collages (clippings and cut-outs), drawings and sketches interspersed with his handwriting; prominently feature his love for nostalgia, handmade paper and bookbinding. A diaristic presentation of his aesthetics, letters, mementos and other keepsakes also find their way into the pages.

It’s a very intriguing exhibit, and one that you just have to see if you are in any way a lover of journals or books.

This is your chance to say goodbye to Lopez Museum and to view BenCab as nobody has ever seen him before.

DIY discovery: Recycled, heat-treated pinewood planks!

posted on by Little Bunny posted in Crafting and DIY, Home life | 1 comment

For a christening party I’m doing styling for, I need a sign made of wooden planks. Unfortunately, it seemed like there were none to be found. Finally I hit upon looking for pinewood on OLX, and voila, several sellers turned up. Unfortunately most were located in areas that would have been hellish to commute to and it was far too expensive to take a cab.

Happily there’s one in Makati, right along the C5 East Service Road. They have THIS AD on OLX, and it’s relatively easy to get there, even if it’s a little far.

They don't always do custom work, but sometimes if you ask nicely they can make neat stuff like those wine carriers.

It’s a shop run by a father, his son and his nephew. They break down industrial pallets and recovered bits of lumber and make them into easily transportable planks. They also heat-treat the material, to make sure the wood is free of termites. The shop is open from Monday to Saturday, 9am to 5pm, and if it looks abandoned, just step in and call out for someone.

        PHONE NUMBERS: 0929-960-4857 / 02-478-7813

ADDRESS: Lot1, B163, Cadena de Amor Extn, Bgy PEMBO (along C5 Service Rd across Market-Market, Bonifacio Global City), Makati City, Metro Manila

Here's a map. They also have one in their ad. Google is your friend.

Here’s a map. They also have one in their ad. Google is your friend.

        DIRECTIONS:
        1. If you’re coming by car or cab, it’s a bit of a long ride. Make your way to the entrance of the East Service road from SLEX and just follow along that. Don’t go up any overpasses because the second one will take you way past the shop, and you’ll end up in Eastwood. Remember to keep to the right part of the road, and that Googlemaps is definitely your friend here.

        2. If you’re commuting, you can go to Market Market in BGC, find the bus terminal across the way from the open air food court, and find the little crossing bridge. Cross to the other side, turn to your left, and walk up the road carefully (because you’ll be walking along a sidewalk facing away from cars on a freeway).

There’s only a tiny sign, so be alert. Going back home with your loot shouldn’t be a problem since a lot of cabbies frequent the area, eating at the roadside carenderias. There’s also Guadalupe jeeps that pass by. I made the poor decision of trying to walk back to the bridgeway carrying 24 planks of wood. Don’t do that.

Heat-treated, recovered wood planks, perfect for your DIY projects.

The place is great if you’re only looking for a small amount of wood (e.g. you don’t need a small truck to haul all your material away) or if you’re looking for a place with coherent staff.

I found the boys tending shop to be smart and accommodating. The owner who answered my phone call was nice too. Especially in comparison to other ad owners: I had called one of the places that advertised custom-made crates in QC, but for some reason, the guy who answered the phone was either high or drunk and even though I kept asking about the wooden planks, all he would say was that the guy who made his crates was absent. I didn’t even ask after the crates, but whatever, manong.

So… crafters and weekend warriors, hope this helps. 🙂

There are few things more thrilling than a bird’s eye view of a sprawling cityscape, and one of them is a 360-degree view of the said cityscape.

That’s partly why people flock to the 33rd floor of the MDC building in Eastwood City, Libis to eat at 100 Revolving Restaurant, one of the most unique dining spots in the country. Run by multi-awarded veteran chef Jessie Sincioco, not only does it offer a spectacular range of dishes inspired by Filipino ingredients and cuisine.

But now there is a new reason for folks to drop by the scenic resto on weekends. For Saturday lunch, 100 Revolving Restaurant will be serving a buffets that changes like its view.
