It sits at the ground floor of Edsa Shangri-La Manila, high ceilings framed by glass panels and velvet curtains. Following beefy tradition: Carmelo’s serves up some of the best Wagyu in Makati

posted on by Little Bunny posted in noms and nibbles | Leave a comment

My thirties aren’t exactly the best years to be falling in love with steak, especially not when the steaks in question are made of the richly-marbled hunks of meat that is Wagyu beef. I can’t help it, though. I was recently introduced to Carmelo’s, a charming yet spacious resto in Greenbelt 5, where I discovered the pleasures of the (beef) flesh that I’d never had before. If you’re craving for some of the best Wagyu streak you can find this side of Kobe, head on over to Makati, and don’t stop til you hit Carmelo’s doors.

There is a murderer in your kitchen

Yes, there’s a killer and a kitchen, and if you’re the one indulging your family in deep-fried ulam every single day, then you’re the guilty party. Everyone knows that some fast food restaurants should start offering life insurance as their food’s so loaded with artery-clogging fat and oil; but don’t your loved ones deserve better than having grease shoved down their gullet at home?

Most likely, you believe they do, but think that you can’t possibly cook fat-free because the food’ll stick to the pan and become a ruined mess. No worries! Oil-free cooking is a reality – and not because of chemical-laden “non-stick” coatings, either. There’s a lot of ways to reduce the oil in your diet, and some people even do it with classy pots and pans from Royal Prestige Cookware.

So, can a change of cookware possibly keep you from seeing your cardiologist more often? Why yes, yes it can.

Can’t keep a good guy down: Grillery stronger than ever

At the urging of friend and fellow foodie Kim Marcelo, I found myself at the Grillery one evening, far from home and not knowing what to expect. The restaurant itself was a transplant – it had originally been located in my hometown until they ran into some unexpected difficulties.

Their original location folded up, but the Grillery rose again, this time in Greenhills Town Center in Quezon City. After all, you can’t keep a good guy down, and the restaurant happens to have a powerhouse team of good guys behind it – brothers Edmond and Raphael “Rayan” Dannug.

Last night my friends and I had drinks while tucked between seas of glittering lights – the clear night sky dotted with stars above, and the breathtaking blanket of Makati’s city lights below. We were at 71 Gramercy, one of the city’s newest and hottest lounge clubs.

Situated at a phobia-inducing 70 stories above street level, the place not only offers a breathtaking view of the metropolis below, but also an excellent dinner menu. You can wine and dine and relax with friends and family while enjoying the feeling of being on top of the world for a few hours.

we wound up at Bone and Barrel in Eastwood city a couple of months ago at the invitation of a friend and on the promise of flavored beers. While not a beer drinker myself, I was curious about how they flavored beer in the first place.

Still not a beer drinker - but these brews are fun for those who have acquired the taste.

One delectable evening at Cafe Adriatico

I was recently invited to join other Open Rice bloggers in a dinner that was hosted by the LJC group as it and its first restaurant, Café Adriatico, celebrated their 35th year anniversary. I was a little shocked to find that this vanguard of my teenage years is a year younger than I am. If these walls could talk – it has seen the rise, fall, and rebirth of the Malate economy, stood staunch against political change, and even weathered a kitchen fire that destroyed almost half of the establishment.

Cafe Adriatico harkens to all romantics – whether you be in love or just love good food.

The restaurant’s quietly elegant façade has not changed at all since I first saw it, and neither has the group’s dedication to providing their customers with memorable experiences accented with excellent food.

Two weeks ago, I was lucky enough to be part of a select group that was invited to experience the ultimate wine pairing dinner: the fine wines of Le Cellier and Spiral’s gastronomic selections. Sofitel Hotel’s restaurant Spiral is renowned for having one of the largest and most varied buffets in the country, and Le Cellier was set to showcase the myriad of possible pairings to be made from the entire spread and its variety of wines.
